CORE

CORE for 5th grade is taught by Ms. St. Lawrence. CORE is a mix of language arts and social studies. For this class, I chose to share a very educational but fun video game that we played on the internet. It is about slavery. In the game, you are a runaway slave, and you have to face the challenges that a runaway slave (and a slave) would face at that time. Some examples of these challenges are doing all of the work that a slave has to do, trying to survive while running away without getting caught, making sure you don't get identified, deciding whether someone is trying to help you or catch you, and standing up for your fellow runaway slaves. After we played each part of the game (there are 5 parts), we had to answer some questions about what we played, and a 1-2 paragraph writing prompt about a certain part. I played the game and wrote the answers with a partner. You can play the game here:

http://www.mission-us.org/pages/landing-mission-2. You will have to make an account to play.

I chose to share this project with you because it was really cool how you could control what you say and do, and depending on what you decide to do, something important will happen. Also, if you do something wrong, you get caught and you have to start that part over. Because of this, you get a first-hand view of slavery and learn a lot about it. You also learn a lot because you can see a lot of actual things that happen in history, and the other characters tell you what's going on, which is really showing you what was happening back then, in the times of slavery. By doing this project, I learned a lot of things. I learned all about slavery, how hard it was to be a slave, how different people had different views about slavery, and what abolitionists were trying to do to stop slavery. This also shows my best work, my skills as a student, and my achievement because I worked really hard with my partner on the review questions and writing prompts.
