How to survive the 8th Grade

8th grade is the final year at AdVENTURE, the year in which school transitions from the small community AdVENTURE provides to a more rigorous curriculum that prepares you for high school. 8th grade is in many ways similar to previous years at AdVENTURE, but also has many main differences that you need to prepare for in order to survive the 8th grade. As an 8th grader who is about to graduate, here are some tips for surviving the 8th grade.

One thing you need to know about the 8th grade is to stay ahead of all of your work. During 8th grade, there will be a lot of work from all of the classes and even though it may seem like nothing will happen if you procrastinate, it will eventually become a habit and will make it hard to catch up and complete your best work on a project. Over the course of this school year I wasn’t motivated to work on certain projects, and I started to put off working on them. At first, it’ll seem like it’s perfectly fine but procrastinating  just adds a lot of stress before the deadline of an assignment. It will also prevent you from completing your best work, which means you may get a bad grade and that your project will not be as good as you want it to be. Because of this, it is very important to not procrastinate and stay on schedule to complete all of your work to the best of your ability.

8th grade is also different from previous years in the type of work assigned. Though there are still many projects, the work also takes the form of some worksheets and traditional methods of learning. I feel like this is good because it helps to prepare you for high school while still giving  you the AdVENTURE experience of hands-on learning. This was one of the most difficult things about 8th grade for me because I wasn’t prepared for it and it took me a while to adjust to the new way of learning. My biggest piece of advice for adjusting to this is to be as creative as possible in every assignment you do, even if you don’t need to be creative to pass the assignment. Being creative on an assignment can make any assignment more fun and makes your final product look better.

Probably my biggest piece of advice about 8th grade is to enjoy it. 8th grade is your last year at the unique program of AdVENTURE and all too quickly it slips away. It feels like the start of the school year was just yesterday, but here I am making my e-portfolio at the end of the year, wondering where the time went. Even though during stressful times you may sometimes wish for school to end, this is your last year of AdVENTURE and make sure to try your best and make as many memories as you can.

Though 8th grade has tougher work and may seem difficult, I guarantee that if you stay on top of your work and try your best you can make it one of your best years here at AdVENTURE. 8th grade is the transition from middle school to high school, and I hope you can enjoy it as much as me! The one thing I wish would have been done differently was the way teachers assigned projects. Many of the projects had teams that didn’t work very well, which meant that I had to do a majority of the work. Also, many of the projects were long-term projects that were very fun, but I think that we could have had projects on a smaller scale in between because after working on a project for months the efficiency of our work goes down and we fall into the same repetitive routine. Overall though, I think that I enjoyed my 8th grade year a lot and so will you!
